Robert M. Nappe

EMT-P, EMS-I

Instructor
Yale New Haven Health - Center for EMS

New Haven, CT

Bob Nappe has nearly 50 years of experience in EMS, beginning his career in 1978 and retiring from field operations in January 2026. In addition to his EMS career, he spent 30 years as a police officer and, in 2004, answered the call of the President to serve in Iraq. For the past 10 years, Bob has worked as an ALS Instructor with Yale New Haven Health’s Center for EMS (CEMS), teaching a variety of emergency medicine courses. Through his experience in education, he recognized that many emergency response training simulations lacked a true sense of realism. To address this, Bob attended moulage training and introduced realistic injury simulation techniques into CEMS training programs. Bob is a strong advocate for incorporating moulage into emergency services education, believing that realistic simulations better prepare providers for real-world events. He brings this passion for enhanced training to the Expo with the goal of encouraging organizations to adopt moulage as a valuable tool in their education programs. As he believes, the closer training is to reality, the better prepared providers will be.

Crafting Chaos: High Impact Moulage for Realistic Medical Simulation

Moulage is the specialized practice of creating lifelike injuries and anatomical effects to enhance the realism of medical and emergency response training. High-fidelity simulation has become an essential component of modern medical education, and realistic visual cues significantly improve learner engagement, clinical assessment, and performance under pressure.

EMS educators, regardless of available resources, should be committed to creating training environments that closely mirror real-world patient encounters. This session introduces participants to the foundational principles of moulage, including the creation of wounds, exposed bone and tissue structures, and practical makeup application techniques.

In addition to instructor demonstrations, participants will engage in a hands-on workshop component, allowing them to practice building and applying moulage techniques directly. This interactive experience is designed to strengthen creativity, problem-solving, and technical skills, aligning with the philosophy that “Moulage is 20% education and 80% imagination.
