Matthew R. Streger is a paramedic and attorney with forty years of EMS experience. Matthew is a Partner at the law firm of Keavney & Streger in New Jersey where he focuses his practice on the needs of EMS agencies and healthcare providers. He is the recipient of multiple law and EMS awards and is admitted to practice in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Matthew has practiced law since 2006 and is a past leader in the New Jersey State Bar Association. He previously worked in EMS systems in New Jersey, New York, South Carolina and Ohio. Matthew served as the Executive Director of Mobile Health Services (EMS) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey and the Deputy Commissioner of EMS in Cleveland. He was a member of the Panel of Commissioners for the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) from 2015 to 2020, and is a principal member of the CAAS 4.0 Standards Committee. Matthew completed his Paramedic Training at the UMDNJ School of Health-Related Professions in Newark, New Jersey. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from the City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a Master of Public Administration Degree from Clemson University, and a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law. Matthew is an Adjunct Professor at Eastern Kentucky University and a Paramedic at St. Clare’s Health in Dover in New Jersey. He is also a member of the New Jersey District XIII Ethics Committee.

The Room Where It Happens: How to Stand in Front of Other People and Inspire Them (Friday, October 23, 2026 - 10:45-12:00pm)

You have probably sat in a room at some point and been truly inspired by the person speaking, and you have also likely wanted to get up and walk out because the speaker was so ineffective. But what makes the difference, and can you learn to become the inspiring speaker?

This class will review real-world tools for speakers in all areas to develop content and materials, own the room, and deliver presentations that inspire audiences. How do you format materials so they are useful and engaging? How do you effectively (and legally) use videos or audience polling? What should you do on the day of your presentation? How do you handle people who attempt to disrupt you?

We will cover these topics and more, using popular music songs to illustrate and reinforce the lessons in a memorable way.

How do you look at your partner and tell them they are doing something wrong—something you believe could harm the patient or even put yourself at risk? Now, how do you address that same concern when speaking with a supervisor, physician, or law enforcement officer? In the 1970s and 1980s, a series of commercial aviation crashes revealed that crew members recognized significant safety risks but did not know how to communicate concerns to those higher in the power structure. In response, the aviation industry developed Crew Resource Management (CRM), a structured approach designed to improve communication, teamwork, and safety. This lecture will review the history of CRM, how it was adopted by the aviation industry, and the lessons it provides for healthcare. Participants will learn a structured process for addressing concerns across a power gradient through a formal, escalating communication model using real-world healthcare scenarios.
Everyone has had a moment in their career when things went off the rails. Maybe you were called on the carpet at work, or even worse, suspended or terminated from a job. But what happens when the situation is much more serious? What happens if you are called before your state EMS office and your certification is at risk? Or what should you do if someone is considering criminal charges against you? This lecture will walk through the various phases of a sentinel event, from the immediate aftermath and investigation to the involvement of external entities, the final outcome, and any long-term impacts. We will review employment and legal considerations, social media, personal messaging, and other factors that can affect your career. Finally, we will discuss what to do if you experience a major negative impact on your EMS career and explore steps you can take to rebuild your professional path and reputation.

One of the most difficult challenges EMS providers face is their first promotion. Suddenly, the people you worked alongside are now reporting to you, and they may still be working beside you as your partner. However, there are numerous real-world pitfalls that can derail relationships and careers. It is critical to learn how to navigate this transition when you realize you are no longer just a passenger on the ship.

This program takes a tool-based approach to reviewing the fundamentals of leadership that apply at all levels and how they shape these initial relationships. We will examine leadership relationships and influence, the immutable laws of leadership, employee interactions, communication techniques, human resources issues, professional growth, and self-protection.

This lecture provides a foundation for new organizational leaders while also serving as an important refresher for experienced leaders.
