She is a Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Flight Nurse, and has her certification as a Critical Care Transport Provider. Janet works full time for Bourbon County Kansas EMS as a nurse/medic. Responding to trauma in an industrial setting can be challenging due to the wide variety of environments and hazards that may be encountered within a service area. Welding shops, paint shops, farms and ranches, auto repair facilities, and construction sites are just a few examples of locations where responders may encounter unique trauma situations.
While general trauma care principles still apply, providers must understand the specific considerations associated with industrial incidents. This presentation will address several types of injuries commonly seen in industrial settings, including chemical exposures and decontamination, ocular injuries, high-pressure injection injuries, degloving injuries, impaled objects, and harness/suspension syndrome, among others.
Participants will gain a better understanding of the unique challenges associated with industrial trauma and the specialized considerations needed to provide effective patient care in these environments.
Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) are becoming increasingly common as the number of patients living with heart failure continues to grow and the availability of heart transplants remains limited. VADs provide heart failure patients with additional treatment options, including Bridge to Transplant and Bridge to Destination therapies.
This presentation will discuss the management of patients with VADs, including commonly used device brands, which devices providers are most likely to encounter, and how to interpret alarms and buttons on VAD controllers. Participants will learn how patient assessment changes when caring for a VAD patient and what considerations are necessary during evaluation and treatment.
The session will also include a hands-on opportunity to explore VAD controllers and batteries, as well as access commonly used VAD reference materials created by Thoratec. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of VAD technology and the skills needed to confidently care for these unique patients.
