Understanding and Navigating Poor Health Outcomes in Deaf Patients (Friday, October 23, 2026 - 1:30-2:45pm)

This 75-minute presentation will explore inherited and acquired comorbidities, as well as barriers to accessing adequate routine medical care within the deaf community. Participants will gain insight into the unique healthcare challenges faced by deaf individuals and how communication barriers can impact medical evaluation, treatment, and outcomes.

Through real accounts from deaf individuals who experienced inadequate language access during high-risk and high-stress medical procedures, attendees will better understand the importance of effective communication and patient advocacy in healthcare settings.

Time permitting, the session will include a brief workshop introducing basic American Sign Language (ASL) skills for EMS providers. Attendees will receive ASL cheat sheets, free of charge, to help support improved communication and more effective interactions with deaf patients in the field.
