Dan Greenhaus has served as both a firefighter and EMS professional in urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout his 25-year public safety career. He spent several years working in the New Brunswick and Newark, New Jersey, EMS systems before relocating to North Carolina. Committed to lifelong learning, Dan earned a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governors University, complementing his Bachelor of Science in Information Management and Technology from Syracuse University. After 25 years in emergency services, Dan transitioned his focus to Technical and Confined Space Rescue while pursuing a career in the private sector as a Senior Risk and Information Security Analyst for a global Fortune 50 company. Despite the career change, he remains active in the fire and EMS community, teaching at his local college and serving as a Technical Rescue Specialist in North Carolina.

Are they sick, or are they not sick... Is that the only question? (Thursday, October 22, 2026 - 4:00-5:15pm)

Regardless of your certification level, there is a very important question that needs to be asked: Is the patient sick, or not sick? How do you make that decision? Can a First Responder make that determination? What about a BLS provider or an ALS provider? Is the answer the same regardless of your certification level? And what is the even more important question that needs to be asked about the patient’s condition? This session will briefly review patient assessment and provide objective tools to help you make that decision at the First Responder, EMT, and Paramedic levels. The presentation will also guide you in providing a more coherent and effective report to providers delivering higher levels of care, especially when caring for those truly sick patients.
