Assistant Chief Johnson has 33 years of EMS experience, including 24 years as a paramedic with New Castle County. He is a member of Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, where he served as Deputy Chief of EMS for eight years. He previously led the University of Delaware’s EMS program and served as EMS Coordinator for football events and special operations event planning from 2000–2010. He has presented nationally with the National Collegiate EMS Foundation and served as Director and National Conference Coordinator.
Chris currently oversees the Administration/Special Operations Branch for New Castle County EMS, an agency with 159 paramedics. His career has included roles as Field Training Officer, Field Supervisor, Recruiter, CISM Team member, Paramedic Academy Commander, and Operations Shift Commander. He is an instructor for the ALERRT program, specializing in Active Assailant Integrated Response training, and serves on Delaware’s statewide Active Assailant Response Committee. He also teaches EMS and leadership programs throughout the region.
Chris holds an associate degree in Paramedic Technology from Delaware Technical & Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Delaware, and completed graduate studies in Organizational Leadership at Wilmington University.
Effective EMS supervisors can coordinate even the most complex incidents. Even the least experienced supervisor can successfully manage large-scale events by focusing on basic principles and maintaining strong incident management practices.
This presentation uses a multi-casualty school bus collision and two-hour extrication case study to break down the critical components required to successfully mitigate these types of incidents.
Participants will receive practical tips on activating technical rescue teams, coordinating with school districts, utilizing multiple hospitals, providing effective clinical care during prolonged extrication, managing logistics for obtaining four units of whole blood, coordinating multiple aircraft, integrating on-scene EMS physicians, and understanding the importance of patient follow-up as it relates to long-term resiliency.
