Mary Turano is the Allied Health Program teacher at East Lyme High School, as well as an EMT and EMS instructor. She leads the school’s highly successful EMT Certification Program, which is also offered as a University of Connecticut Early College Experience course. Mary coordinates the program’s comprehensive curriculum, clinical experiences, and Connecticut Department of Public Health requirements in partnership with Hartford HealthCare, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, and local EMS agencies. She also serves as an Adjunct Pre-College Summer Instructor at the University of Connecticut.
The East Lyme High School EMT Certification Program is recognized as one of the most comprehensive programs in the state. The program has developed several unique partnerships, including Combat Medic Training with the Army National Guard, a collaboration with the UCONN School of Pharmacy, and a Global Language patient assessment component.
With a focus on innovative education, real-world experience, and preparing the next generation of EMS providers, the program has achieved an NREMT exam pass rate that is currently higher than the national average.
